Getting my yard ready for winter

Okay you yard gurus, lay it out there for me.
I have a fairly well established yard, but have several somewhat bald areas which I plan to overseed tonight after slice aerating. I'll also be putting down a bit of lime, but am wondering what the best fertalizer would be. A neighbor just did this same thing and he put down a bunch of 10-10-10. Is that a good option for winterizing? There are a few weeds (crabgrass I think) which showed up awhile back, but I guess I need to wait until spring to take care of those and use this opportunity to get ready for winter.
In the past I used Scott's lawn service and they did a pretty good job, however I'm trying to save a few $$$ and do it myself so I need to establish a routine plan.
    Ideas and suggestions greatly appreciated.

JMO, I wouldn't over seed now. It's too late. I would do a soil test so you know where your pH stands. Lime appropriately now, then wait and seed in the spring. Fall is (usually) the best time to seed, but it's too late now. Doing your liming now (and actually do a soil test, don't just guess how much) will give time for the soil to be ready for spring seeding. Your soil test should also tell you what you need for fertilizer.

just cut it kinda short and let it burn so you won't have to cut it as often.

    that's a secret i learned.
