How to kitty litter train my cat?
How do I introduce Columbus to the litter box? So far, he has been peeing in the floor or, just as likely, on me when I rub his belly. The few times he has pooed has been in the floor. Even though it was a tiny poo, I want the future ones in a box. I don't want him to make it a lifelong habit of using the floor as his potty.
Every other kitten I've had has been old enough to show them the box and close them in the room with it for a short time and presto! They forever after know what to do.
I've tried setting him in a shallow shoe box with litter after he eats. I've scratched around in the litter with my finger and taken his little foot and scratched. I put his little poo in there. All to no avail. I know it's early in the game, but I need some advice. I have to watch him like a hawk to make sure I catch him when he puddles on the floor. And it's not easy as little as he is. Of course, knowing when he pees on me is easy. I get that warm feeling

It's a little messy but a good litter box for a tiny kitten is a throw away aluminum baking sheet with some litter on it. That way they can just walk right on it with no work. As far as getting him to us it, you'll just have to persistently take him back to the litter box every few minutes after he eats until he goes. It's a bit aggravating but the persistence will eventually pay off. Also, it wouldn't hurt to set him up in a little crate with a the letterbox and let him spend a couple hours a day in it.

cats can be pretty smart. work on up to getting the cat to use the toilet instead of a box.
Be the envy of your cat friends
